Happy New Year! Best wishes for the coming year.

Sorry that this update is a few days late. I just got back from Japan yesterday and I'm still battling with jet-lag.

So after being away for a year, my visit to Japan was great. It was wonderful having the chance to see family, friends, and co-workers after so long. I have to say that, unlike Los Angeles, having lived in Japan for so long, I still feel like there is a place where I belong when I am there. It's also definitely an ego boost given the respect I have within the industry over there (as compared to still being in the process of rebuilding everything from scratch over here.)

Still, I felt that this time going back to Japan was in one way very different from the last time I went back. A year ago, when I went back for the holidays, it definitely felt like "going back home to Japan," but this time it was more like "visiting Japan again." It would seem that over the course of these past two years I have slowly gotten used to life in America again. And all of those things about the American and Hollywood way of doing things that used to cause me so much trouble, no longer faze me. It has taken a while, but it looks like I am finally ready to face life in America again. Stay tuned and let's see what the coming year will bring!

So with Thanksgiving past, we bid November farewell. Only a few weeks remain for 2009. Then again, the fact that I have been seeing Christmas decorations up since before Halloween has done a wonderful job of destroying any sense of the normal progression of the holidays...

Like October before it, the beginning of November was quite busy for me. But then from Thanksgiving to New Years, the industry tends to switch to holiday mode. And while there is still some work, there definitely isn't much in the way of new projects. But then I am planning to take this opportunity to get away from LA and head back to Tokyo for the winter holidays. I'm definitely looking forward to being back in Japan after so long.

This month's picture is from the Improv performance I had at the beginning of November. If you look closely, you will see that my name is spelled "Mark Musasha." Okay, so granted this is not the first time someone has misspelled my name, but still...

Long time no speak. Mark Musashi here, back from the dead with the latest news in my life.

Once again, I must apologize for the lack of updates. It has been a very hectic couple of months.

As you can see from the picture above, Halloween came a little early to the Musashi house this year. It was just for one day, but I got to take part in a shoot for a zombie battle complete with special effects make-up. It was loads of fun. Oddly enough, before that I was playing Jesus Christ in a three week film shoot which began at the end of last month. Quite the contrast in the two roles there, but I suppose if you really thought about it both of them were people that came back from the dead. I wonder if there is a message in there somewhere...

In the future I hope to update this blog at the end of each month. I'll do it even if I have to come back from the dead to!!! Yeah, well, anyway... If during the month you want to keep abreast of what is going on with me, you can always find the latest news at my official site: www.markmusashi.com.

Wishing everyone a Happy Halloween!

Long time no speak. Sorry about that, but I was actually out of town for the later part of last month with my first (and hopefully last) road trip across America. Unfortunately, I have not yet gotten around to sorting out the pictures, so those will have to wait until next time.

The picture above is of my new scale. It was purchased primarily to weigh packages for shipping, but since it had been a while, I decided to weigh myself as well. 141 lbs. I seem to remember that I was at about 155 when I left Japan last year... Aren't people supposed to PUT ON weight when they move to America???

I have always been on the thin side. I actually lose weight if I stop working out. It is pretty common for people to ask me if I have lost weight, but I have yet to have anyone ask me if I have gained weight. Kinda makes you wonder if one of these days I am just going to just fade away...

So, before dwindling away any further I'm off to eat lunch. Might do some push-ups after that...

Happy Mother's Day! The first thing that I did when I woke up this morning was give my mom a call. Then again, I was half asleep for the entire conversation, so maybe it would have been better to wait a little while before calling...

So the wonderfully monstrous picture above is of me a few weeks ago. As you can see, my hair had gotten a little bit on the long side. While I was in Japan, I generally would grow my hair out until I needed to cut it for work. (I figured it was easier to cut my hair at a moment's notice than to try to grow it out.) But then, there were always several times throughout a year that I would be called upon to either match my hair for stunt doubling or to cut it to suit a role. Since coming to America, though, things have been quite different. I have generally gotten cast "as is," and because of that never really had to chop any of my hair off. The next thing I know, I start to look like Cousin Itt.

Now I have my hair back to the way it was last year when I got my profile pictures taken. I think that the slightly longer hair with the moustache and goatee work for me. Of course, I don't mind changing things for a role if necessary, but for now, I think this is more of who I am.

Yesterday I went indoor skydiving for the first time. (Well, to be honest, I've never been outdoor skydiving either.) I must say, though, it was AWESOME! Yes, I have through my various wire stunts and high falls known what it feels like to be disconnected from the earth for a while, but being able to float and control your body for a full minute is unlike anything I have done before. "So this is what it feels like for birds riding thermals," was the best way I could describe it. I'm definitely going to have to try this again someday.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Okay, yes, that is over a month and a half late now. But if you look at it from the Chinese calendar, I am only about one month late... Yeah, again, sorry about that.

My apologies for not updating my blog in a while. Back in December I went back east and spent my first Christmas at home in 10 years. Right after that, I flew over to Tokyo to spend New Year's and the following two weeks with friends and family in Japan. Right after getting back to LA, I spent the next three weeks on a motion capture project and then the last two weeks have been filled with things like updating my profiles and getting ready to file my tax returns. Things have finally calmed down a bit, but I must say that it was quite nice being so busy. My current goal is to find the next project to get involved with before this momentum dies down.

However, I will say that it was definitely nice to get away from LA for close to a month around the holidays. When you are busy with work, often times you can't really see much other than what is directly in front of you and you can lose grasp on the bigger picture. In my month off, I was able to spend a lot of time figuring out my future goals and how to approach them.

So it's a new year and there is plenty to do. And for those of you that have the chance, be sure to check out "Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight" on the CW network. Your support keeps me going and I thank you all for that!

Yesterday I voted in a United States election for the first time in my life. I had the ability to do so 12 years ago, but to be quite honest, I had no interest whatsoever. Especially once I started living in Japan, the goings on here in America seemed very distant and unrelated to me. How very ignorant I was.

These days, the world is facing some very serious issues. Things like wars and global economic failures. These are things that no single person, whomever they may be, can fix on their own. But if nothing else, I believe that the feelings of many people changed last night. And with that change of outlook, the future looks just a little bit brighter now.

The first decade of the 21st century is soon coming to a close and the next decade is rapidly approaching. Who knows what the next era has in store for us? But I for one am looking forward to what changes will come.

No, I didn't get married. I just played a married man, which happens to have been my first acting job since coming back to the states. Not only that, the job just happened to be the 100th episode of CSI: NY! I still can't believe it myself. To be honest, I really didn't do that much, but the fact that I got to take part in a show of that scale as fast as I have is incredible. The episode should be airing in the states around the middle of November, and at some point should make it all over the world. If you get a chance to see it, do try and find my American television debut. (It will probably last all of a couple seconds, so don't blink.)

／Where does the road lead?

Yesterday, thanks to the wonders of a site called YouTube, I finally got to see the final episodes of my favorite show as a child, "Space Sheriff Shaider." I must say, it was a beautiful thing (although I couldn't help laughing at Annie and Shaider shaking hands while the sun set). For a show that had such a huge impact on my life, it might seem a bit laughable that I never saw the ending until now. But on the other hand, you could say that because I never saw the ending, the story was never really over for me.

It is always a little sad when a show or movie ends. Granted, it usually ends with some kind of resolution by the protagonists, but the fact that you will no longer get to see them doing what they do isn't exactly a happy thought. I can definitely say that it has been like that will all of the projects I have been involved with. It can be a bit sad when the filming comes to an end, but it's when the broadcast/run comes to an end that I really feel a sense of something lost. Of course, there really isn't anything you can do about that. Without closure, there is no feeling of accomplishment, so it has to end some time. And then you look forward to the next story/chapter to begin.

These days I spend a lot of time thinking about the next chapter in my life. When I was in Japan, I often felt that I had a good idea of how my life would play out, but since coming back to America there is little about the future that I feel is certain. But with that uncertainty comes the freedom of being able to re-assess where it is I want to be headed. I enjoy Wushu. I like this industry. I am a big fan of tokusatsu/hero stories. Thus far I have been able to figure out those three things. As for where those three things will lead me... Well, I guess I will figure that out somewhere along the way.

Since coming back to America, I have been using the internet in efforts to promote myself. While I was in Japan, I used to use mixi a bit (sorry to all of my mixi friends, I haven't done anything with it in months), but here it seems like a Myspace and Facebook are absolutely essential. Of course, with so many members of the industry essentially working freelance, without broadening your network, you can't really expect the amount of offers to increase. Plus, for auditions, I hear it is always good to have as much information about yourself available online as possible. That way a casting director can call in an unknown, but still be somewhat confident as to the level of performance they will see. One of these days I will have to put together markmusashi.com to act as my online business card.

Recently, however, it hasn't been my use of the internet, so much as other people's that has been on my mind. I am sure that when you read this blog, you read other people's comments that are attached to each post. Occasionally you may find a posting which is an advertisement for some other site. Every week I have to erase at least 500 of those comments from this blog. The majority of them are sites selling cheap pharmaceuticals (almost all for viagra...). Now while I am guessing that most people are not going to be looking to a friend's blog to find the best information on medical supplies, I am sure there are plenty of people who may "just check the site out." (I occationally find myself checking out the sites as I am deleting them.) So in the end, all those random postings are in fact doing a spectacular job of getting the word out about those sites. Now I personally would have no intention of randomly and shamelessly trying to promote myself on other people's site's, but as much as you hate to, you do have to admire people who can use a tool to it's fullest.

On a final note, if in the process of deleting those comments leading to other sites, I happen to delete your comment by accident, please post it again. Believe me, it is sometimes hard to notice one real comment in the middle of 500 worthless ones. I do try to be as careful as possible, but if I do make a mistake please be sure to let me know. Thanks for your help and support!

Muscle Men

When I was in Japan, I never really put that much thought into my physique. I wasn't exactly huge, but I wasn't by any means small either. Plus, when I was doubling for actors, if I was much bigger it might have been noticeable. Generally speaking, slim and agile was my ideal body type.

Recently, I started going to a sports gym here in Los Angeles. Wow. Occasionally you might see people like this in Japan, but here it looks like over half of the people in the place are twice my size. Okay, granted this is a bunch of people who are going to the gym on weekdays in the middle of the afternoon (probably a lot of them are in the industry), so they aren't exactly the average people you may meet, but I will say that it has gotten me wondering if I don't need to bulk up a bit more.

A couple of days ago I was speaking with another stuntman that I know. (He is in really good shape.) He was saying how he needed to put on about 25 pounds of muscle by next year in order to double for an actor. I'm just wondering if the day will come when I might have to do something similar. I mean, I did go on a diet for close to a year (yeah, that wasn't fun) for work before, so I'm sure I could do it, but it is a reminder of how tough this job can be sometimes.

One last note: A recent interview that I did for the site R5 Central has been posted. You can download it from the site at the following address:

Sorry for the lack of updates (again). It's been a busy month, and I have just had a hard time finding the time and energy to update my blog. The job that I mentioned in my last entry ended smoothly. I think I left a good impression on the coordinator and the rest of the staff. There is no saying whether another character that looks like me will need to be doubled in the future, but at least I was able to make some connections and broaden my network.

Other than work, I actually took my first trip to Hawaii at the beginning of the month. One of my friends from college was getting married, so I flew out for the ceremony. Hawaii really is a beautiful place and I would have liked to spend more time there. Still, until I get something of a regular income, it is kind of hard to justify long vacations, so we kept this one to just a short weekend excursion.

One last bit of news is that it looks like Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight has gotten picked up by a network. It is supposed to start airing episodes early next year. (What I did won't be shown until much later, though, seeing as I came in near the end.) Be sure to check it out. And if you haven't seen the official trailer yet, you can find it here:

I am evil! Fear me!!!

So yeah, I guess this look suits me a bit better. For whatever reason, I think the black suit and slicked back hair just really works for me. Over here, this would of course be my Italian mobster look. There actually was a movie that was looking for random mobster thugs a little while ago, but unfortunately I hadn't received my new head shots yet. At least now I am prepared for the next time something like that turns up.

Speaking of work, this week I will have my first job since the end of Kamen Rider! =) It's for a kids show where I will be doubling for a Harajuku style Japanese teenager. Which kind of brings back memories of Sh15uya... And seeing as I will be doubling a teenager, I am obviously going to have to shave off the beard and mustache. Aaa, just when I finally get my profile shots done, I have to lose the facial hair and look like a different person. Which means that I should probably go and get a couple more shots taken for those times that I don't have facial hair... =P

Still, I finally got my first job, so things are looking up. And while it's not a huge project, it is a chance to make some connections that could lead to more stuff in the future. Hollywood, here I come!!! (Well, stunt-wise anyway. The acting career is still in development...)
